Desktop should to act also like navigation system (menu), like in Ubuntu Netbook Launcher (UNL) - double navigation system (lateral/side menu, like UNL and Desktop menu, like in Provisio SiteKiosk).
Lateral/side menu is fixed main menu and Desktop menu is changeable depending of the navigation level (sub-menus).
Generally, look&feel like UNL (included transparency and included icons appearance for Desktop menu).
Menu and sub-menus can not depend on Alacarte, it must to be additional setting with sudo rights (I have some base for applet, but it is more useful for explanation than it is functional).
EXAMPLE
- Main menu (always laterally visible)
Internet, Office, Graphics, Games, Photos, Videos, TV Shows, Music, Kids, Education ... (generally, based on users/clients type).
- First level sub-menu
For Internet is - Browsers, Chat, Social Networking, etc.
For Games is - Linux, Windows, Sony Playstation 2, NES, etc.
- Second level sub-menu
For Linux Games is - Arcade, Adventure, Actions, etc...
- Third level sub-menu
For Action Games is - Single player, Multiplayer, etc.
Finally, search function must be included (e.g. 800 Sega games must be searchable, or few thousand movies or thens of thousands of music songs, etc.).
List view, Icon view, etc. are also desirable.
So, similar to XBMC.
Medias will be stored in central media server.
Generally, XBMC can be acceptable, but problem is how GNOME panel must be visible and available for user all the time.
