Edit PHP-serialized entry as Text and update MySQL database using Javscript

I have a long text field in a mySQL database that stores serialized data. I would like to update this field from Google appscript / javascript. Updating the field directly with a string of the serialized data does not work. I need a way to update the database with an update statement, to update the php serialized field. There is something like this "�*�_answer" in the database.
