Psst. THE TOOL you want for diagnosing memory leaks is *valgrind*. If you want a tool for managing your own memory leaks, then valgrind is available. Any product you develop would have to complete with this (free) software package. If you want to investigate such tools for academic reasons, then its source should give you many clues. Hey, I had done something similar in C, where i had created wrapper over glibc standard malloc/free and was able to detect the memory leak at the time of program exiting. Limitation of this was that i was able to detect the memory leak only during exit and not as soon as when it happens. I can enhance that code to work with C++ with additional feature of detecting memory leak as soon as it happens for atleast basic data type. Let me know if you are looking for something similar.
