We want to know which Venture Capital (VC) backed companies have iPhone / iPad apps on Apple's iTunes app store. For those companies, how to find their apps on the iTunes app store, and the URL for the VC backed company that made the app.

To perform this task, you'll need spreadsheet software, a web browser, and Apple's iTunes software. On a Mac Apple's iTunes app store software is named "iTunes" and it is in the Application Folder. (Please note, on a Mac, "App Store..." in the Apple menu searches only for Mac software, not for iPhone apps. You need to use the iTunes app.) No clue where the Apple iTunes app would be installed on a Windows machine.

Attached is a spreadsheet of some Silicon Valley VCs.

Each VC URL takes you to the top level page on their web site that links to all the companies they have invested in (companies in their portfolio of investments). You are looking for their portfolio companies that have iPhone or iPad apps on Apple's iTunes app store.

Some VC web sites allow you to view "All" or "Current" portfolio companies. If you can filter their list by Current only, please do so. "All" includes companies we don't care about, those that got sold, went public, or went bankrupt. Companies with a stock ticker symbol or mention of who bought them can be ignored. We are only interested in the companies that the VCs are actively involved with.

Using the information on the VC web pages to search the iTunes app store is an art. If we could provide a step by step process for finding all the companies with iPhone / iPad apps, we'd write software to do it. You will need to use your search skills.

The first VC in the spreadsheet has the data filled in. If you look at the spreadsheet, Company A, techscape, was easy because the company name is unique. Company B was tricky since "alarm" is used in the name of hundreds of apps. The web site, [url removed, login to view], was the search term that found their apps. Companies C & D needed two of the words in their company name. Companies E & J needed the "inc" to locate them. Companies G & I changed their name and their apps were listed under their old names. There were other company names from the first VC that produced iTunes search hits but because the company names were very generic, and the portfolio company didn't seemed to be related to the apps, they were not included with the first VC data.

The attached spreadsheet has labelled slots for each VC for 26 companies, A to Z. If the VC has more than 26, add another line to the spreadsheet for that VC.

For the winning bidder, start with one hour of data gathering. Send the spreadsheet and I'll review the progress and decide how many more of your hours to purchase. I do need the entire spreadsheet filled in so this job could require quite a bit of time.
