We are using Shopify with the Supply Theme. We want to build a website which sells both pre-orders which ship at a later date, and current instock items which ship right away. The problem we keep encountering on all platforms is finding a way to do the shipping. I'll try to explain below: We need to accept both pre-order and instock items in one shopping cart, then calculate the shipping separately as sub-orders. 1 - We want the instock items to ship as one sub-order. 2 - Each pre-order item needs to ship as it's own sub-order. For example: If a customer buys 4 of pre-order item A then it should go into the one sub-order but if they order 3 of pre-order item A and 1 of pre-order item B then we need to split them up into separate sub-orders for items A and item B. Each sub-order can be 1 box or a set of boxes, this will be determined by a Bin Packing algorithm. The Bin Packing algorithm packs the sub-order items into boxes we can preset. Ideally for each box packed we want a generated picture map of where the items are placed in the box and a list of the items in that box. I have attached some links at the end to existing Bin Packing algorithms which seem like they might handle that part of the process. Shipping needs to be calculated for each box. We need to show sub-total shipping costs for each sub-order by adding up the shipping for all the boxes of that sub-order. In the admin interface there would need to be some backend configuration we can do. Pre-order items need to have a start and end date so we can open pre-orders at a specific date then close them also on a specific date. Also need to restrict the number of one pre-order than users can order at a time. We would need to be able to add, edit or remove the boxes that the shipping algorithm uses to calculate Bin Packing. We think to do this we may need to add fields for each product's dimensions as well as start and end date. These fields can have their values set when we upload product lists from a CSV. Some details follow below. Product Dimensions: Add fields under shipping for product dimensions (H x D x W) Product Dates: Add field for product availability Start & End date Products show only if Start date is at or exceeded Products stop being available for order once end date is exceeded (set inventory to zero?) Product Order Quantities: Pre-order items should be restricted to X number able to be added to cart per order/per customer Shipping Calculations: Split orders into sub-orders based on pre-order item(s) / instock items Box packing algoritm decides on a box or set of boxes for each sub-order Box packing provides item list per box Box packing provides map of item positions in the box Shipping is calculated per box Shipping shows subtotals in cart for each sub-order Cart shows total cost (+tax) and total shipping, payment is for total cart.
