large Joomla database Project

Hi,
Seeking mysql database and joomla expert.
My Joomla database has about 3.4 million rows in content table. Very slow and often use out of resources. To speed up it, I segmented it into 6 sub-tables and added many indexes. However 2 new problems happened,
1. category blog layout do not show article list;
2. frequently memory used out, could not connect to database, 500 and 404 errors reported by Google webmaster tool 15000 times per day, many pages show slow or not show(query long time)
I would like you have an evaluation on the database and let me know if you will work on the current database including 6 sub-tables, or the original joomla database of big content tables.
I would like you help me optimize the database ultimately by optimize sql, index, database structure, php, etc. Make the website show correctly and very fast.
Before start, please let me know know what step would will you take.
