Hand and arm problems in flutists and a design for prevention

Ergonomics
Hand and arm problems are frequent in flutists. Severity is largest in professional players, which can result in being disable to work. Based on a biomechanical analysis we designed supports for the left and the right hand which can be easily clipped on the flute. Tests by professional flutists demonstrated that the left hand support eliminated extreme extension of the index finger and the right hand thumb support prevented rotation of the flute about its longitudinal axis.
