Overview: As an advisor to the Minister for Education and Employment [in a country of your choice] you have been asked to write a short speech to be made in Parliament outlining a policy vision for his/her 4-year term in Government. The speech should be 1000-1200 words [3-4 pages double-spaced] in total.
Learning Outcomes: This assignment is particularly aimed at addressing the following course goals:
a) enhanced knowledge of the multiple causes of poverty and inequality
b) improved written and oral communication skills
Instructions
Before you begin:
Select a country for your assignment.
Do some background research on that country’s rates of education and employment, and other socio-economic indicators for that country that might be relevant for your speech.
Think about your audience. Your perception of the audience you are addressing should shape the tone of your speech. Also, remember that you are going to write as though your speech will be listened to, not read by the audience. This means that you should keep sentences and paragraphs relatively short. A speech usually has more repetition of important information than a written text too, since some people will inevitably get distracted at key moments.
Think about structure. Like an essay, a speech needs an introduction, a main part and a conclusion. In other words, (i) tell them what you will tell them; (ii) tell them; (iii) then tell them what you told them.
Now you’re ready to start:
Tell the audience how many major points you will cover in the introduction since this structuring will help the listener to follow your thoughts. You may want to include an anecdote or interesting fact at the start to grab the audience's attention.
Use phrases like, “As an example of this” or “This brings us to the larger problem of”, so that the speech is easy for an audience to follow.
Add support to each of the main points you raise using data, examples, quotations or other supporting material. You can cite authors too but there is no need for a full bibliography.
At the end, briefly summarize your argument.
After completing your first draft:
Read your speech out aloud to yourself [and someone lese, if possible]. Was it clear, compelling, persuasive?
Are there any places you could improve?
