I just had to do the exact same thing for another client with 11k+ members, using buddypress. It was a week long project. First thing is your hosting. You should be running on a vps with at least 3gb cpu & 4gb-6gb of ram - 2gb real time, 2-4gb cached. Then you'll want to check your php versions, ensure that object caching is activated, check that there arent' any broken urls in your theme (images not there, etc), Gzip or Zlib file compression activated, your plugins are up to date & well coded. If you have chat functionality on the site, you'll want to make sure it's not overpolling the server, because otherwise it'll cause a bottleneck and kill your performance. Sometimes doing this is an easy process that's a matter of deleting a few bad plugins & other times it's a drawn out nightmare of trying to figure out what's eating of your resources & how to fix it.
