Can a US company hire a Venezuelan freelancer?

We want to hire a freelance software developer for a remote position in our company. We have a candidate and we'd love him to join our team, but he is from Venezuela. We've read in the US Embassy website ([login to view URL]) the following warning: "U.S. citizens and residents considering trade with Venezuela may wish to seek the advice of experienced legal counsel, given the range of economic sanctions potentially affecting such transactions. See the section on Commercial Disputes and Legal Resources below." Is that an issue for my company (Inc.)? Can my company potentially be affected because we've hired a Venezuelan freelancer? We are looking for the advice of a US attorney. Thanks!
