Laminated dough animation

I'm working on a portfolio project deciphering complex technical processes for lay folks. I'm writing this material, but I think a lot of it would benefit from some fun animations, very simple movement, color changes, things that you might see step-by-step in a PowerPoint presentation, but more fun, more flexible, and small enough I can post on my blog to accompany the writing.

My first project is explaining how all of the layers get in a croissant. Ultimately, the goal is to show in a few steps what happens when butter is combined with dough, is folded, and is heated up, and how the math works out to get so many layers.

If you want to see this process demonstrated, start watching at 3:39 of this video: [url removed, login to view] NOTE: These are not the exact steps that I have documented, but this is an example for your reference.

I have this storyboarded already, but my drawing skills are best described as that of a 2-year old. Also, I have it storyboarded in great detail so I can write the steps, but I don't know if the animation needs to encapsulate all of the drawings I'm using for reference.

My animation inspiration is Stick Figure Theater. Really, that simple. I want these concepts to be plain simple to the folks reading them, so I don't want the animations to distract.

Final animation would be non-Flash format. Could be an animated GIF, could be HTML5, could be javascript, could be an MP4. No interactivity required, no 3D animations, no fancy fonts. Could even be in B&W - except for the color of butter, which would be helpful for users to see. Also note - at my 2-year old drawing level, I can't comprehend how to represent some of the folding techniques when you've folded dough twice in one direction and 4 times in another. This will likely need to be abstracted a bit - you can't really expect to represent 27 or 81 layers visually - but the viewer should understand what's happening.

Any interest?
