The project consists in the design of a power source of High Voltage DC, considering main specs:
- Input: 220 Vac, 50/60Hz
- Max Power: 200W.
- Output: 15kV DC - 25kV DC, variable, with an optimum operating point of 20 kV.
- Programmable operation: programmable output voltage in the range established above; an external input (security switch) has to be able to shut down the output; a current sensor (coil) at the primary of the HV transformer, as you will see in the attached document, should be able to shut down the output for a programmable time in case of a power increasement (for example, a short circuit at the output), after the shutdown time, the output is energized again. The programming itself is not required, but everything has to be considered in the design.
The topology is based based in a high-voltage half-bridge switched mode power supply, which is described in the document attached, a non complete diagram of our current HV source (with analog control) is included.
Basically, is the same circuit, with a uC included and easily programable, having at least 3 inputs: voltage control (potentiometer), overcurrent setting (potentiometer), and on/off input for security switch. Potentiometers are not going to be always connected, so it has to be possible to replace their operation for programming. Our goal is:
- Design the circuit, keeping a simple design and not expensive components.
- Specification of each component. I have specifications for the HV transformer.
- Simulate the circuit (using LTspice or similar), in order to check that everything is working as expected.
The PCB design is not included in the project. More details about which uC to use, or some components in specific, can be discussed later.
