Title: Trust Issues
Subtitle: A Straight Guide to Wills, Trusts, Probate, and Digital Estate Strategies for Your Family
Author: David Kay
Trust Issues is a short, plainspoken guide to estate planning built around one hard truth: most people who love their families have not actually protected them. The author, a financial advisor with 31 years of experience, tells the story of losing his mother's multimillion dollar estate to taxes and a market crash because she could not bring herself to plan, and then confessing that his own trust sat unfunded on a shelf for years. The book walks readers through six questions about what their family would actually receive if they died tonight, then shows them how to finish the plan they meant to finish. The tone is warm, honest, and direct. Never grim, never preachy, never corporate.
The reader
Men and women roughly 60 to 80 years old. Homeowners. Parents and grandparents. They pick this book up at a seminar or see it as a thumbnail on Amazon. They are intelligent, skeptical of being sold to, and quietly worried they have left something undone.
What we are asking for
Bring us your concept. We are deliberately not prescribing a style, an image, a palette, or a typographic direction. Photographic, illustrated, typographic, conceptual, minimal, bold: all welcome. Surprise us. The only measure is whether the cover makes the right reader stop, understand what the book is within two seconds, and pick it up.
Requirements
Trim size 6 x 9 inches, portrait, with 0.125 inch bleed on all sides. Final files must meet Amazon KDP print specifications (300 dpi, CMYK, PDF).
Front cover must include the exact title, subtitle, and author name as written above. No changes, no abbreviations, no added taglines.
Spine: title and author name. Width to be confirmed at final page count (currently 68 pages, so design for a narrow spine).
Back cover: reserve space for approximately 200 words of copy, a short author bio, a small author photo, and a barcode box (2 x 1.2 inches, lower right). Final copy will be supplied to the winner.
Title must be fully legible at Amazon thumbnail size (about 100 pixels wide). We will judge entries at thumbnail size first.
All imagery must be original, properly licensed, or generated with rights cleared for commercial print use. Document your sources.
No gavels, scales of justice, piggy banks, or clip art families holding hands. Beyond that, the field is open.
No AI generated text rendering with spelling errors. Every word on the cover must be typeset correctly.
What wins
Instant clarity about what the book is. Emotional intelligence: this book is about protecting people you love, not about death. Distinctiveness on a shelf of beige and navy legal books. Restraint. And a designer who can articulate, in two or three sentences, why their concept fits this book.
Deliverables from the winner
Print ready PDF with bleed, front cover JPG at 2560 x 1600 equivalent for Amazon, ebook cover variant, layered source files, and one round of revisions with the author.
Judging and rounds
Round one: front cover concept only, judged at full size and thumbnail. Shortlist of 5 to 8 advances. Round two: shortlisted designers complete the full wrap and receive the back cover copy. Author selects the winner. Feedback provided to all shortlisted entries.
Notes for designers
The word "trust" is doing double duty in the title: the legal document and the human feeling. The strongest concepts will honor both. The book's interior is set in Georgia with a restrained, classic feel, but your cover is not required to match it. Design the cover that sells the book; we will follow you.
One line to keep in mind while you work, from the book itself: "A folder, even a nicely bound leather binder, is not a plan."
